Lit Review

I am still working on my lit review and considering people to interview. I am going to schedule some interviews during Mardi Gras break and finish my lit review. The lit review has me bogged down, but I appreciate reading the articles because it provides different perspectives on the issues I want to understand. My lit review also inspires new ideas. I will also set up a natural hair gathering over the break. If the meetup is a success, the meeting can add a lot of insight to my research. I will also incorporate the new question from out last meeting into my interviews, and I'm guessing it will spark interesting conversations.

  1. That sounds great Shea. I am really excited about the meetup idea. Before jumping right into it, though, I'd review your methods text on focus groups. If there's not enough there to guide you, let me know and I'll dig up something.

I'm also really excited about something else that occurred to me with regard to that woman's comments: "they're giving away our secrets". Here's a sequence of conversation I envision with someone like her: "I want to understand what you mean by that, so I'm wondering if it's tied to discrimination. First, do you believe white people see blacks as just as attractive as whites? Do you think that works against us sometimes? And if so, do you think we'd be more likely to like the natural look if it was a world of just black people?" I dunno, Shea, that probably wouldn't do it, but I'll tell you this, that one quote sums up a whole idea. There something in "secrets" in the way she says it that's linked to "secret weapon," as in, a weapon used in a conflict or war, and that conflict is against racism and discrimination. Something like, "so you think I'm 'nappy headed' and ugly? watch this." And are they saying that sometimes to themselves, not the "generalized other" of whites? Lets talk about this soon.

Also, I just got a set of annual reviews in my office that could help with your lit review. You can come by anytime to look at them.
